There are many choices when it comes to essential oils. These days, you can find them in health stores, natural foods stores, supermarkets, bargain stores, department stores, online, EVERYWHERE! And the price ranges are just as varied! What’s the difference between the brands? Why the price differences? Why bother to spend more?
To answer all those questions, first I need to share some background information. Much like with supplements, there isn’t much regulation when it comes to essential oils. And some of the regulations that are in place are not very stringent. For example, did you know that a bottle of essential oil only needs to contain 5% essential oil to be considered “100% Pure Essential Oil”? That’s right, only 5%! That means that 95% of the bottle can contain toxic fillers, chemical extenders, and, at best, carrier oils. This means that the bottle of “essential oil” is diluted and can be toxic. And, of course, lower quality “essential oils” will be sold at a lower price, making them more appealing to the consumer and more profitable for the company.
